APLAM, in conjunction with the Quebec-Asia Law and Business Association (QALBA) invites you to a panel discussion and cocktail with Davis LLP on the current trends, challenges and rewards of law practice in the Japanese and Asian context. Davis is the first and only Canadian law firm with an office in Japan, and one of the first non-Quebec based law firms to establish a practice in Montreal. Two reputed lawyers in Japanese affairs, and a former ambassador to Japan and Korea, have graciously agreed to speak with us. Join us for this rare opportunity!

The Panel Participants

Me Michiko Hara is a corporate and commercial lawyer who has extensively lectured and written on various legal topics. She co-founded the law firm Hara Rothschild, a full service boutique that serviced the unique needs of Japanese corporations, entrepreneurs and individuals doing business in Canada and elsewhere. In February 1997, Hara Rothschild merged with Davis LLP.

Me Doug Buchanan was National Managing Partner of Davis LLP for two terms, 1995-98 and 2004-07. He is one of the leading lawyers in Canada in the areas of banking, corporate and M&A, project finance and project development, and apparently has also managed the Japanese National Hockey Team.

Mr Don Campbell is Senior Strategy Advisor at Davis. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of CAE Inc, Ambassador to Japan and Korea, Deputy Foreign Minister and Deputy International Trade Minister. He also supervised the negotiation of NAFTA.

L'AVENIR DE LA FINANCE EN ASIE ET L'INTERNATIONALISATION DU RMB


Professor Arner is Director of the Asian Institute of International Financial Law and a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong. He will be a Visiting Scholar at McGill University until January 2011. Professor Arner has published widely in the area of global financial law and regulation and has served as a consultant with, among others, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.


Professeur Arner est Directeur du Asian Institute of International Financial Law à la Faculté de droit de l'Université de Hong Kong. Il occupera le poste de chercheur invité à McGill jusqu'en janvier 2011. Professeur Arner a publié de nombreux ouvrages dans le domaine du droit financier mondial et de la réglementation financière. Il a également occupé le travail de consultant au sein, entre autres, de la Banque mondiale, la Banque asiatique de développement, et la Banque européenne pour la reconstruction et le développement.L'Association du droit de l'Asie Pacifique à McGill (ADAPM) et le Junior Hong Kong Canada Business Association vous invitent à une discussion au sujet de l'évaluation de la monnaie chinoise et des répercussions d'une réglementation de la monnaie chinoise sur l'économie mondiale. La présentation se tiendra en anglais.

Beginning her legal career with 9 years in a top Montreal firm, Martine took her career to an international level when she accepted an offer from Clifford Chance in London. In 2000, Martine moved to Clifford Chance's Singapore office as a Senior Associate where she worked for 5 years covering South East Asia and South Asia.

Martine qualified as a lawyer with the Quebec Bar and as a solicitor with the Law Society of England and Wales. She speaks fluent English and French, conversational Bahasa Indonesia, and Spanish.

Today as Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong, Martine oversees corporate lending, leveraged finance, acquisition finance, project finance, equipment leasing and other wholesale lending in Asia Pacific.

Caroline Bérubé is a well-respected international lawyer living and working in mainland China. She began her legal career in Singapore working for a French law firm that subsequently was bought out by a British law firm. During that period, she represented international corporate clients and banks in asset-financing and M&A cross-border transactions, travelling to various Asian countries in the course of her work. In 2002, she joined a Chinese law firm specializing in corporate law.

Presently, Caroline Bérubé focuses on Chinese corporate law and commercial practice, an area in which she has built up well-respected expertise amongst many European, Asian and North American clients. Caroline is especially well-regarded for advising clients on the Asian legal structure of their companies, based on her solid understanding of the pitfalls and advantages of most Asian jurisdictions. ??Caroline has advised clients in various industries such as manufacturing, energy (oil, gas and mining), technology and services.
